Does a Personal Year Start in January or on Your Birthday?

Two conventions should not be mixed
In a calendar-year approach, a Personal Year applies from January 1 through December 31 of the selected year. In a birthday-cycle approach, a practitioner assigns a cycle between successive birthdays. These are interpretive conventions, so an unlabeled answer can be confusing rather than mathematically wrong.
Number JD uses the calendar-year convention. Its calculator combines the birth month and birth day with the target calendar year, then reduces to a single digit. The birth year is used for a Life Path calculation, not for this Personal Year formula.
Example: a birthday on July 14
For 2026, add the digits of month 07, day 14 and year 2026: 0 + 7 + 1 + 4 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 22, then 2 + 2 = 4. The result is Personal Year 4 under the single-digit calendar-year method.
For 2027, the total becomes 23, then 5. Under the calendar-year approach, that change happens on January 1, 2027. It does not wait for July 14. A birthday-based reading needs its own clearly stated year-selection rule; do not quietly import one into the calendar calculation.
What a year theme can do
Use the label as a prompt for a review: what routine needs attention, which commitment is realistic, or what unfinished work needs closing? The date boundary does not cause an opportunity or prevent a setback. A practical calendar remains useful regardless of whether the symbolism resonates.
When keeping notes across years, record the convention at the top of the page. That lets you compare your own decisions without changing the calculation midway through a cycle.
