1/20 as a Decimal and Percentage: Division, Check and Example

1/20 = 0.05 = 5%. Follow the division, distinguish exact and rounded answers, and apply the fraction to a group of 480.

The answer and what it means

1/20 means 1 equal parts out of 20. Dividing the numerator by the denominator gives 0.05. Multiplying that value by 100 gives 5%. The fraction, decimal and percentage describe the same share; they use different scales.

Keep the fraction beside the decimal when accuracy matters. A percentage is a number of parts per hundred, while the denominator of the original fraction may be something quite different.

Work through the division

The calculation is 1 ÷ 20. Start by asking how many whole copies of 20 fit into 1: none, so the answer begins with 0. Add a decimal point and continue dividing the remainder multiplied by ten. Each new digit represents a smaller place value.

The first six decimal places are 0.050000. This decimal terminates. The reduced denominator is 20, and its prime factors contain only 2 and/or 5. That is why a finite base-ten decimal is possible.

Convert to a percentage and check it

Calculate (1 ÷ 20) × 100 = 5%. Going back means dividing the percentage by 100. Multiplying by 100 twice would make the answer a hundred times too large.

For a second check, multiply the exact fraction by its denominator: (1/20) × 20 = 1. If a rounded decimal gives a slightly different product, the discrepancy comes from the rounded representation rather than a different fraction.

A complete group example

Imagine a box with 480 counters, of which 24 are blue. Their share is 24/480. Divide top and bottom by 24 to obtain 1/20. There are 456 counters of other colours, so the blue and non-blue counts add back to 480.

To find the blue count from the share alone, calculate 480 × 1/20 = 24. It is easier to divide 480 by 20 first and then multiply by 1. This keeps the intermediate arithmetic whole and avoids unnecessary rounding.

Try the method on another total

If the box instead contains 800 counters in the same proportion, how many are blue? Divide 800 by 20 to get 40, then multiply by 1: the answer is 40. The count changes, but the fraction and percentage remain the same.

A fraction of a total requires that total to be known. The percentage alone does not tell you how many objects exist. Always report both the share and the base when comparing groups of different sizes.
